K WOODEN LIVESTOCK WAGON. BUILT FROM 1899 ONWARDS, THESE WAGONS COULD BE SEEN THROUGHOUT THE STATE. THE LAST MEMBERS OF THE K CLASS WERE WITHDRAWN IN THE EARLY 1990s. WHEN FITTED WITH MODERN BOGIES, THESE WAGONS WERE CLASSIFIED AS KA.

HISTORY: -
This wagon SWING OUT and DROP DOWN doors on each side at opposite ends. This wagon was fitted with ARCHBAR BOGIES and in the late 1960’s the bogies on most K wagons were changed to modern QR20 type bogies (similar to 2BP bogies). The K class wagons were only suitable for goods trains and not express freight train speeds (until bogies replaced). They had a carrying capacity of 16 head of cattle. Like most livestock wagons in Queensland there is a walkway along the top of the K wagons to enable a drover to check the condition of his stock on route. When overhead wiring was installed in South East Queensland most K wagons had the walkways removed. Nowadays drovers generally do not accompany stock trains either. There were 451 K wagons to see service with Queensland Government Railways.
